Physical vs Chemical UV Filters
Mineral (physical) sunscreens reflect and scatter UV photons at the skin surface, offering immediate protection with minimal systemic absorption. Chemical filters absorb UV energy and convert it to heat; they require 15–20 min to bind keratinocytes and can trigger photosensitivity in reactive skin types. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide remain the gold standard for sensitive and post-procedure skin.
Critical Wavelength & UVA
SPF measures UVB protection (290–320 nm) but does not quantify UVA defence (320–400 nm). UVA penetrates deeper, driving photoageing and matrix metalloproteinase activation. The critical-wavelength test ensures that 90% of absorbed UV energy falls within the broad-spectrum range (≥370 nm).
